Since opening in 1979, the Hotel Puente Romano has shaped its history from each and every one of the great moments that have taken place in their facilities.
The most exclusive and important social and sporting events have left their mark on the life of the hotel, which is still present after the passage of time.
Hotel Puente Romano was built in 1974, as one of the most exclusive apartment complexes on Marbella's "Golden Mile". Following the successful management of the Marbella Club Hotel, the glamorous meeting point for the 60s and 70s international jet set, founder and owner, German-Spanish Royal Prince Alfonso Von Hohenlohe, launched his business idea for the Puente Romano Complex.
Mr. Mouaffak Al Midani, one of Marbella Club's most frequent and favourite customers, showed great interest in the Puente Romano Complex. After many conversations with Prince Alfonso, he finally was able to acquire Puente Romano in 1979.
The heart of the complex and its social pole was the authentic Roman Bridge, from which it takes its name. This ancient bridge, dating back to the 1st century, is a vestige of the Roman road linking Rome and Cadiz, the renowned Vía Augusta.
In 1979, Puente Romano opened officially as a hotel.
The Hotel Puente Romano was, since it opened, the meeting point for the international jet set; especially thanks to "Regine's Club", a very popular nightclub at the time.
The first important event hosted at the hotel was the wedding of tennis legend Bjorn Borg and Mariana Simionescu in 1980. From that moment onwards, the famous tennis player became the Director of the Puente Romano Tennis Club. Later on, Wimbledon Champion, Manolo Santana took over as Director of the Club from 1983 to 1998.
In 1982, the Puente Romano Hotel became a member of the prestigious list of luxury hotels; The Leading Hotels of the World.
The following years, from 1982 to 1994, the establishment underwent thorough refurbishment works and was enlarged to host more rooms and suites. The star was the inauguration of the Imperial Suite, with magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea, in 1994.
Mr. Al Midani's heirs sold the Puente Romano Hotel in 1994 to the David Shamoon Family, who still own the establishment today.
Since its inauguration, the Puente Romano Hotel has welcomed many important figures and has hosted many important events.
The Puente Romano Tennis Club was the honorable host, in 1988, of the David Cup classifying match between Spain and Mexico, which resulted in a Spanish victory.
Wimbledon Champion, Manolo Santana, was the Director of the Puente Romano Tennis Club from 1983 to 1998.
In 1992, international opera star, Montserrat Caballé, held her first concert on at the Main Court of the Tennis Club. Other important concerts were those with stars such as José Carreras, Ray Charles, BB King, Paco de Lucía, Van Morrison and Grace Jones, among many others. Also in the same year, the Puente Romano Hotel was awarded the first prize of "Alimentos de España", presented by the Ministry of Agriculture, for its varied and exquisite cuisine.
In 1994 and 2004, the Puente Romano Hotel was names "Best Hotel" for its marvellous gardens, by the Association of Gardens of the Costa del Sol. Over 400 species flourish thanks to the special microclimate we enjoy in Marbella. Many of these species were gifts from friends from around the world. In the year 2000, the Hotel hosted the Australia tennis team, which trained for the Barcelona Davis Cup in the Hotel's Tennis Club.
Since 2004, the Puente Romano Hotel has been proud host to the Nations Senior Tennis Cup, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Emilio Sánchez Vicario, Mats Wilander, Jim Curier, Thomas Muster, and Yannik Noah, are just some of the many tennis legends that have participated.
In 2004, the Puente Romano Hotel celebrated its 25th Anniversary with a series of events held throughout the year to commemorate such a special date:
- February: Dinner and Concert at the Andalusia Hall, with Andrew Lloyd Webber.
- April: Gala Dinner and the "Chicago" Musical, from London West End.
- July: Blondie, concert in the Central Court of the Tennis Club.
- July: Dionne Warwick Concert.
- July: Nations Senior Tennis Cup
- August: Van Morrison Concert.
- October: "West Side Story" Charity Gala Dinner, on behalf of the "Reina Sofía Foundation" and the Alzheimer's project; having received the name as benefactor patron of the Alzheimer's project on the Foundation's Web page: www.fundacionreinasofia.com
In 2007, the Puente Romano Hotel was chosen for the celebration of the Charity Gala Dinner in favour of the Reina Sofía Foundation's Alzheimer's Project.
In 2009, 2010 and 2011 the Puente Romano Tennis Club has been the official site of the women's "Andalusia Tennis Experience" tournament, and was also selected for the official training sessions of the Spanish team at the David Cup during the quarterfinals against Germany.
