History

The Puente Romano was built in 1974 and immediately heralded as one of the most exclusive apartment complexes along Marbella’s fashionable Golden Mile.

Prior to building Hotel Puente Romano, visionary founder, the German-Spanish Royal Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe, had met grand success with neighbouring Marbella Club Hotel — a crown jewel of the jet set back in the sixties and seventies. A favourite and frequent guest at Marbella Club was Mr. Mouaffak Al Midani. His interest in Puente Romano grew after many conversations with Prince Alfonso. Therefore, it was no surprise when he purchased the Puente Romano in 1979 and converted it into a luxurious resort hotel.

The Hotel Puente Romano takes its name from the ancient Roman bridge, which was built in the first century and still stands in the centre of the gardens. The original luxury apartments were large, opulent and enjoyed either a balcony or terrace view — that legacy continues to this day.

The first of what would be many important events at the hotel was the 1980 wedding of tennis-legend Bjorn Borg and Mariana Simionescu. Soon afterwards, Bjorn Borg became the first Manager of the now renowned Puente Romano Tennis Club.

Throughout its storied history, Hotel Puente Romano has been a meeting place for the international high society set. The famed Regine’s Nightclub attracted trendsetters from around the globe. In 1982, just a few years after opening, Hotel Puente Romano was honoured to become a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.

The David Shannon Family purchased the hotel in 1994 and his vision shapes Hotel Puente Romano to this day. A steadfast belief that a luxurious resort needs an equivalent banquet and conference setting, the Andalucia Conference Centre opened in June 2002 as one of the largest and most modern Conference Centres in Costa del Sol. The Salón Andalucía, the largest room, comfortably seats up to 650 guests and can be subdivided into five large rooms as needed.
